As I write this, there are only 8 days left until the regular trout season opens here in New Zealand! I say regular because I, like a number of other hardy (mad) souls, have been fishing right throughout winter here in the South. The winter season is an invigorating time to spend on the water, usually cold (although mostly its been a more mild winter than normal!), and hard slog on heavier gear all day to have success. Of course its always worth the effort! Unfortunately I seam to have given myself tennis elbow in my casting arm from regularly slinging a stiff 8wt and high density lines! Its actually been there for a while, but I've chosen to ignore it up until now. Anyway, enough on that! Looking towards the new season, right now, the river flows combined with less snow/ a mild winter everything is looking in really good shape. Lets hope we don't encounter the big spring floods like we did last season that wiped out a lot of water until almost Christmas!
Bookings for the season have started to trickle in, so I am absolutely stoked about that. I had the pleasure of guiding Robyn and Sharon from Australia recently for a short half day. We had a stunning morning on a local river, clear blue sky and hardly a breath of wind. Both had fly fished before, briefly, in Scotland. They picked back up the casting and fishing very well, great job guys!
A few photos below of recent times, great catching up with Mike, Jeremy, Robbie, and Sam on the water, and taking my boy Jackson out to a local reservoir!
Good luck and tight lines for those venturing out for the start of the season, go hard! I will be...
